Vacant Land Opposite Ocean Square

Thank you to our Chairman Lise Lotze who contacted the land owners, Camisa Properties who own the vacant land opposite Ocean Square Centre, and asked them to please tidy up this land.

They proceeded to have it fenced off.  SBHOA is not aware of any proposed developments for this land currently but will make it know if any proposed applications to come forward.

Finding your way around Sunset Beach could not be easier.  Whilst we are still trying to decipher the reason for the road names, herewith an easy explanation to begin with.  

If you have any further insight into the road names, other than they are all named after a shell or some part of the ocean, please do share with us your findings too.  Thank you

Temporary Closure of Recreation at Rietvlei due to Toxic Algae finding

Rietvlei closed to public due to algae 

The City of Cape Town is temporarily closing the Rietvlei Water Area after a blue-green algal bloom was observed in the water on 16 March 2017. Read more below:

The Milnerton Aquatic Club’s 24-hour endurance sailing challenge, which was scheduled to take place at the Rietvlei Water Area tomorrow, 18 March and Sunday, 19 March 2017, has been cancelled as a result.

The City collected and analysed water samples yesterday, 16 March 2017, and again this morning, 17 March 2017, and found that microcystin toxins associated with blue-green algae exceeded the World Health Organisation’s recreational guideline for freshwater water bodies.

The algal blooms usually present as green, blue-green, white or brown foam, scum or mats floating on the surface of the water. Exposure to these algae can cause eye irritation, skin rashes, mouth ulcers, vomiting, diarrhoea, and cold-or flu-like symptoms.

Drinking or swallowing large amounts of water can be extremely dangerous.  

Members of the public should avoid all contact with the water at Rietvlei until it has been declared safe.

Due to the ongoing drought and low water levels there are extensive areas of exposed dry shoreline around Rietvlei.

It is suspected that the 5 mm rainfall that was recorded on Wednesday, 15 March 2017, washed accumulated minerals and organic material from decomposing and dead plants along the shoreline into the water at Rietvlei. These minerals and organic materials, combined with high ambient temperatures, could have provided the nutrients for the rapid growth of algae in the water.

The City is monitoring the water quality and will inform members of the public once it is safe for recreational use. The City apologises for any inconvenience caused as a result of the closure of the water area.

The closure only applies to recreational activities in the Rietvlei Water Area, including fishing, but does not prevent anybody from accessing the Table Bay Nature Reserve’s other visitor facilities such as the picnic areas, braai facilities and the bird watching trail. As such, the Table Bay Nature Reserve will still host an open weekend on 18 and 19 March 2017.

How to Be a Good Neighbour

Being on bad terms with your neighbour can make your life frustrating, day after day. But taking the time to establish good terms with your neighbours has numerous benefits. The community will be friendlier, the neighbourhood safer, and the area a nicer and more comfortable place to live.

Tips

1. Send them a bouquet of flowers, invite them over for dinner, offer to babysit or petsit, something like that. They will be very happy.
2. Really good neighbours watch out for each other. They ask each other for advice, and offer to help, especially on matters that impact the larger neighbourhood. They respect each others' boundaries but are quick to assist in a crisis. They look for opportunities to collaborate and to socialize. - Great neighbours make for great neighbourhoods, and it is well worth the effort.
3. Check local regulations regarding fires in your backyard and noise levels. There are laws in most jurisdictions regulating such things.
4. If you are experiencing problems with an anti-social neighbour and you are unable to resolve them yourself, then see if your local government has website information on dispute resolution. For example, look for a website with information on how to tackle anti-social behaviour in your community. Law Enforcement 021 554 8005.

Introduce yourself. Whether you're new in the neighborhood or new residents have just moved in on your block, introduce yourself. Say hello, offer a welcoming gift (the classic homemade pie never fails) and share or ask about the local area: "Where's the nearest pizzeria?" or "The garbage truck comes by on Mondays, usually around 10 in the morning, but sometimes he sneaks in at 8."

Announcing Project Camera Upgrade

Attention all Sunset Beach Residents and Business Owners

Below is the information covering the launch of the upgraded security camera project in Sunset Beach:

Security Camera Project Information

We are lucky to be living in a low crime incident neighbourhood especially if we compare ourselves with other neighbourhoods in Cape Town.  I receive the weekly newsletter from City Bowl area and am shocked to see how crime has escalated to home invasions in the Cape Town CBD.

The SBHOA would like our community to focus not only of the prevention of crime, but also on any existing crime, regardless of the severity.

The existing security cameras have demonstrated a significant impact on lowering crime over the past few years, resulting in several criminals being apprehended.

Taking into account that Sunset Beach has two entrances, criminals (or possible suspects) can be tracked by Crime Watch as they move through Sunset Beach.  Security vehicles are dispatched immediately to investigate or ask suspects to leave the area.

The SBHOA has decided to initiate a security camera  project in Sunset Beach based on the preliminary study completed in partnership with Crime Watch:

1. Additional camera coverage in beachfront areas and Ocean Way Shopping Centre will improve surveillance of these areas that have proven to be problematic in the past; and
2. replacement of existing cameras with higher resolution PTZ cameras (PTZ= pan tilt zoom) will improve the ability to track and identify criminals, especially at night.

This amounts to:

• 1 new PTZ camera installed at the shopping centre.
• 2 new PTZ cameras installed at beach parking areas.
• Replacing the Bay Beach / Ocean Way camera.
• Addition of any other cameras if funds permit.

What is the proposed time frame for installing new cameras?
The SBHOA plan to install the first camera by end of March.  Other planned cameras will be installed as soon as the funds are raised.   We are optimistic and are planning for the remaining cameras to be installed by the end of June 2017.

How will we raise the money to pay for  the camera project?
We need our Sunset Beach community to support the project to help us raise the R120,000 needed for 3 new cameras.  We will be relying on donations from residents and businesses in order to fund this project. Watch this space for more info


Why Crime Watch?
The SBHOA is working with Crime Watch to install, maintain and monitor the security cameras.  The majority of Sunset Beach residents are using Crime Watch as their security company.

Crime Watch is currently managing the existing cameras in Sunset Beach and  have the recently upgraded the network to support all the cameras (incl PTZ cameras) in real time.

Your free "vehicle disk" sticker to display on your car:

To kick-off the camera projects, every household within Sunset Beach will received a flyer and 2 Sunset Beach discs for display on your vehicle.  Business owners and staff will also receive stickers.

Stickers will be distributed with flyers in the next 2 days.

The stickers will help with vehicle recognition as vehicles enter and leave Sunset Beach. Also, identify vehicles/people local to Sunset Beach in a similar type scenario as the "shipwreck" disaster.
